A Silver Bell

In the morning I found a cold silver bell, dripping dew, in my garden. Left behind by midnight revellers, it was caught on a vine and played a silken melody to the wind. I picked it like a tiny argent pear. I shall wear it on my charm bracelet and use it to catch Their attention, now and then.

I love bells. On a tangent, it makes me think of “Sabriel” by Garth Nix, one of my favorite novels. I’ve still yet to read the fourth book in the series.

So nice of them to leave you a gift. I adore bell charms. I have a small ankle bracelet with a tiny bell on it. I for the tinkling sound it makes as I walk.

I read that fairies don’t like bells and metals…

Fairies don’t like iron, but they love gold and silver and this bell is made of silver.

The bell myth is because they are said not to like the sound of church bells (or anything Christian, like crosses or holy water) but I’m sure they used bells in their own music long before that.

People would hang bells in the trees and carry them on their person for protection against those of the unseelie court.

However, I feel that the silver-loving faeries would adore this little bell :)

one of my favourite stories has a fairy horse in it and the legend is that it comes from the sea to drink from an enchanted spring that has bells hanging from the branches over the tree that overhangs it, the picture reminded me of that :)

I just discovered your little kingdom here and it brought me nearly to tears. I thought I was the only one who still looks for fairy rings every time I go into the woods and idolizes Sara Crewe and lives in her own secret kingdom. It’s so lovely to find a kindred spirit!

How mysterious and amazing… Just to imagine who could have left it there: a satyr, a little fairy, Titania herself – who knows? What a great new chapter of the everyday fairytale this must be!

when i was a young wife, i took my collection of tiny old india bells and tied them with blue ribbons onto the branches of a hawthorne tree. for sake of the birds.

they’ve all disappeared over the past two decades. but i still hold the memory of wind and bells in all seasons.
